Cole Hammer’s bid for a PGA Tour card ended in heartbreak after a final-round collapse at the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour Championship. The 27-year-old Texas golfer, who had spent years chasing the milestone, entered Sunday’s final round in 20th place in the season standings—just one spot above the cutoff for a Tour card.
Hammer, a former U.S. Amateur Four-Ball champion and 2019 world amateur golfer, had already made 10 PGA Tour starts since turning pro in 2022, including a career-best T5 at the 2022 RSM Classic.
His 2026 season had been his strongest yet, with three top-4 finishes and a runner-up at the Utah Championship, where he lost in a five-way playoff. After a slow start to the championship, Hammer rallied with rounds of 67 and 69, but five bogeys—including one on the second-to-last hole—derailed his hopes, leaving him with a 73 and a T43 finish.
The result dropped him out of the top 20, ending his long pursuit of full-time status on the PGA Tour.
Hammer’s resilience stood out even in defeat, as he stayed on course after the final round to speak with reporters, acknowledging the difficulty of his round. His journey from NCAA champion at the University of Texas to near-Tour card holder reflects the grind of professional golf, where one bad round can undo months of progress.
Though he missed out this year, Hammer’s experience and recent success on the Korn Ferry Tour suggest he remains a strong candidate for future contention.
