“First Down Will Play a Big Part”: Eric Morris Prepares Oklahoma State for Houston's Nation-Leading Third-Down Offense

Oklahoma State head coach Eric Morris emphasized that his defense must disrupt Houston's offensive rhythm on first and second downs to counter the Cougars' FBS-leading third-down conversion rate. Morris noted that Houston's efficiency on early downs allows them to remain aggressive, making it crucial for the Cowboys to force long-yardage situations rather than relying solely on third-down stops.

The Cowboys aim to build on their recent 42-28 victory over UCF, where they limited opponents to just seven second-half points, though Morris acknowledged areas for improvement in their short-yardage defense. Linebacker Tate Romney highlighted the importance of communication and speed among all 11 defenders to successfully stop Houston's versatile playmakers, including their running backs and tight ends.
