Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has shared his perspective on why he was left out of India’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad, despite his standout record in limited-overs cricket. The 36-year-old, who had taken 96 wickets in 78 T20Is since his 2016 debut, revealed that then-captain Rohit Sharma had informed him the team prioritized a batting-heavy lineup with an extra fast bowler, leaving no room for him in the 15-player squad.
Chahal, who had never played in a World Cup, also noted that his omission was finalized early, with Rohit clarifying he would only feature if a specific team combination aligned—clarity that stung more than being named but unused in later tournaments like the 2022 T20 World Cup. His career saw a resurgence in IPL 2024, where strong performances reignited Rohit’s interest, though Chahal ultimately missed the 2024 T20 World Cup despite being named in the squad.
Beyond international cricket, Chahal recently wrapped up a County stint with Northamptonshire before announcing his retirement from First-Class cricket in August 2026, having claimed 148 wickets in 49 matches.
