Yuzvendra Chahal reveals drunk Australian player nearly killed him

October 16, 2026

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up about a harrowing incident from his early IPL career, revealing how an intoxicated Australian player once dangled him over a high-rise hotel balcony during a team party in 2013. The episode occurred while Chahal was playing for Mumbai Indians and attending an event hosted by Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru.

The unidentified Australian cricketer, described as physically imposing and heavily drunk, lifted Chahal and held him over the edge of a 15th or 16th-floor balcony before others intervened to pull him back to safety. Chahal, who initially believed the player was joking, later described the ordeal as terrifying, comparing it to a 'second birth' in the moment of near-fatal danger.

Though he did not file a formal complaint at the time, the spinner has since reflected on the incident, acknowledging his youth and inexperience in handling such situations. Beyond the IPL, Chahal has taken 233 wickets in 188 matches—remaining the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker—while also representing India in 72 ODIs, though he has not played for the national team since a T20I against the West Indies in 2023.
