New York manager Aaron Boone revealed prior to Tuesday's opening postseason matchup that outfielder Aaron Judge fell just short of making the team's active roster. Judge pushed to recover from a calf injury by participating in live batting practice, but training staff ultimately concluded he was not yet fully prepared.
In his absence, the club will rely on recent trade acquisition Heliot Ramos to anchor right field against Boston's left-handed pitching rotation.
Meanwhile, the Bronx squad welcomed back two regular contributors who missed extended time due to physical ailments. Trent Grisham cleared hurdles related to a hamstring strain and is fully available, while Giancarlo Stanton returned from a long-term calf issue.
Stanton will be restricted primarily to pinch-hitting roles off the bench during the series as he works his way back from numerous setbacks.
