New York has yet to announce who will take the mound for the opening matchup of the upcoming American League Division Series against Tampa Bay. Skipper Aaron Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake indicated the choice rests between Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, though a final determination will arrive shortly before Saturday.
Cole last appeared against the same divisional rival on September 23, yielding two runs across 5.2 frames while racking up eight strikeouts. Boone expressed complete faith in both hurlers, pointing to a pitching staff that led the entire major leagues with a 3.24 ERA during the regular campaign.
Cole is eager to return to action after a layoff of roughly ten days and remains unbothered by the wait. His previous autumn appearance came during the fifth contest of the 2024 World Series against the Dodgers, where he surrendered five unearned tallies over 6.2 innings, bringing his career postseason ERA to 2.77 through 22 outings.
Meanwhile, Cam Schlittler started the initial Wild Card contest and is slated to handle the second game of the current playoff run. Cole emphasized that the squad intends to stick with its proven preparation methods and thorough evaluation process to maintain momentum against their next opponent.
