Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel declined to apply for the role of BCCI chief selector, despite being the frontrunner to replace Ajit Agarkar. The decision came after the BCCI offered an annual salary of ₹3 crore, a figure significantly lower than Patel’s current earnings of ₹7–₹9 crore from coaching the Gujarat Titans and commentary work.
Accepting the position would have barred him from continuing these lucrative roles, making the financial trade-off unappealing. With Patel stepping back, the selection panel now faces uncertainty, as Wasim Jaffer and Romesh Powar emerge as leading candidates for the West Zone spot.
Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has since criticized the BCCI’s selector pay, arguing it must match the head coach’s remuneration to attract top-tier candidates. Meanwhile, Pragyan Ojha remains the acting head of the selection committee, overseeing a panel under scrutiny over key decisions like Rohit Sharma’s future and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s selection status.
