Britain's Kartal misses out on biggest title of her career

Sonay Kartal saw her remarkable run at the Wuhan Open conclude with a 2-6 6-4 6-2 loss to Maja Chwalinska in the championship match. Although the 24-year-old Briton secured an early advantage, her physical and mental fatigue allowed the French Open finalist to seize control and claim the WTA 1,000 title.

This tournament marked only the third appearance for Kartal since returning from a six-month injury layoff. Despite the defeat, her performance ensures she will ascend to 50th in the global rankings and claim the title of British number one for the first time on Monday.
