Why Japan’s new MotoGP superstar said no to Honda

October 18, 2026

Ai Ogura has explained his choice to bypass a Honda promotion in favor of joining Trackhouse Aprilia. The rider felt he lacked the necessary preparation for the premier class and prioritized securing a Moto2 championship before advancing.

This strategic path led to his 2024 title and a historic victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, marking the first win for a Japanese racer in the category since 2004. Following his success, Ogura has secured a factory seat with Yamaha for the 2027 season, where he will partner with Jorge Martin.

He remains focused on his performance as he prepares to assist in the manufacturer's ongoing development efforts.
