Why didn’t George Kittle take a knee? Kyle Shanahan didn’t tell him to

During the San Francisco 49ers' 36-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on September 27, 2026, tight end George Kittle scored a late touchdown instead of taking a knee or going out of bounds to run out the clock. Kittle noted after the game that no one instructed him to slide, while head coach Kyle Shanahan shouldered the blame for failing to remind him in the huddle.

The sequence ultimately forced the Cardinals to attempt a late comeback that failed when Deebo Samuel secured an onside kick.
