Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell enters this year’s bye week with a more optimistic outlook than he did at the same point in 2025, despite a slower start. The Lions sit at 3-2, with two tight wins over the Jets and Saints offset by losses to the Bills and Panthers, but Campbell emphasized the team’s underlying improvement.
Last year, a 5-2 record masked inefficiencies—particularly in the running game, where Detroit ranked 13th in yards per carry (4.5) but posted just a 40.3% success rate, relying on a handful of explosive plays. This season, the Lions average nearly identical 4.4 yards per carry (12th) but boast a far stronger 46.2% rushing success rate, fourth in the NFL, signaling a more consistent foundation.
The turnaround stems from a youthful offensive line overhaul, with rookies and young stars like Penei Sewell, Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, and Tate Ratledge now anchoring the unit. Free agent addition Cade Mays, set to return, will be the oldest starter at 27.
Beyond the line, the Lions are leaning into young talent across the roster, from running back Jahmyr Gibbs (24) to defensive stars like Tyleik Williams (23) and rookie Skyler Gill-Howard (24). With chemistry building and a clear upward trajectory, Campbell sees potential where last year’s midseason struggles lurked beneath the surface.
