With Jalen Hurts sidelined due to a blood clot and placed on injured reserve, Tanner McKee is stepping in as the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. McKee takes over the primary role ahead of a matchup against the Carolina Panthers, having recently reclaimed the backup position from Andy Dalton following a brief stint where Dalton held the second-string duties.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2023 draft out of Stanford, McKee has made just two prior career starts during Week 18 contests in previous seasons.
Now in the final year of his rookie contract, the twenty-six-year-old signal-caller faces the challenge of halting a three-game losing skid and preventing a drop to a 2-4 record. His previous meaningful playing time includes a victory against the New York Giants in his debut start and an appearance in a regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni previously awarded the backup role to Dalton after evaluating training camp performances, but McKee now receives a major opportunity to showcase his abilities on the field.
