The Chicago White Sox claimed a 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 1 of their American League wild-card series. Both clubs relied on rookie starting pitchers, AJ Blubaugh and Hagen Smith, after exhausting their primary rotations chasing division titles over the weekend.
Blubaugh struggled immediately in the first frame, allowing an unearned run following an error by Christian Walker and issuing three walks. Sam Antonacci added a two-run single during a five-run second inning for Chicago, while Grant Taylor also contributed to the mound effort and Houston manager Joe Espada turned to Bryan King and Miguel Ullola from the bullpen.
