The Los Angeles Lakers have fully embraced Luka Dončić as their cornerstone, reshaping the roster around the Slovenian superstar ahead of his third season in purple and gold. Dončić’s arrival has coincided with significant ownership changes, yet the franchise has remained committed to his vision, evidenced by the front office’s aggressive moves to build a supporting cast.
The Lakers traded for center Walker Kessler and locked up Austin Reaves to a four-year, $185 million deal, forming a new core alongside Dončić. Early preseason glimpses—including a combined outing against the Denver Nuggets—revealed a team still finding its rhythm, with the trio finishing at a minus-four in limited minutes together.
Offensively, Dončić showcased chemistry with rookie Ziaire Williams, dishing multiple lobs in their first shared action, while Kessler, though rusty against Nikola Jokić, called the experience “fun.”
Dončić’s health remains the biggest variable, as he enters the season leaner and more mobile after addressing past concerns about weight and lower-body durability. He played a career-high 64 games last season, earning his second scoring title with 33.5 points per game, while also averaging 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds.
His absence in the 2024 playoffs—due to a hamstring injury—cost the Lakers a deeper run, as the Oklahoma City Thunder swept them in the Western Conference semifinals. To avoid a repeat, Dončić must replicate his MVP-caliber performance, though the team’s cohesion will take time to solidify after a roster overhaul and a leadership-driven minicamp hosted by Dončić in his homeland.
