Former national team opening batsman Wasim Jaffer has publicly endorsed Tilak Varma to eventually take over the crucial third position in the batting lineup when Virat Kohli concludes his participation following the 2027 global 50-over tournament. Jaffer pointed to the adaptable youngster's strong domestic red-ball statistics, including a robust first-class average of roughly fifty-five alongside multiple centuries, as proof of his capability across all formats of the game.
Varma has previously featured across numbers three through five in limited-overs matches for the country.
Meanwhile, Kohli confirmed to broadcaster JioStar that the upcoming 2027 competition will mark his fifth and final appearance in the marquee 50-over event, emphasizing his intense drive to claim the trophy. Jaffer also offered observations regarding Abhishek Sharma, noting that the young opening batsman has developed greater composure by taking additional time early in his innings rather than attempting immediate big hits.
In addition to Varma, contenders such as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill remain under consideration for the eventual vacancy.
