Former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju has raised concerns about Axar Patel's bowling effectiveness in the 50-over format, arguing that the all-rounder needs to rediscover his variations to maintain consistency over longer spells. This assessment comes as India prepares for the ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, scheduled for October 2 to November 21, 2027, following Patel's selection for the five-match series against New Zealand that started in Auckland on November 4.
Raju noted that while Patel remains a vital asset with the bat and in the field, the team currently lacks a consistent wicket-taking partner to complement him in the middle overs. He contrasted the current situation with previous successful spin duos involving Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav, highlighting a perceived gap in bowling depth.
The former spinner also pointed to injuries affecting other all-rounders, such as Washington Sundar, which places additional responsibility on Patel to deliver in the coming months.
