The University of Maryland has suspended its club tennis team following the discovery of racist imagery in promotional materials distributed to other regional tennis clubs. The offensive graphic, sent via email to participating teams ahead of a fall tournament hosted at College Park, targeted Black and African American individuals.
The university’s Recreation and Wellness department confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that the team has been suspended pending further review by university police and the Office of Student Conduct. Beyond the suspension, the club has issued an apology and agreed to forfeit its matches in the tournament, while the director of Recreation and Wellness also addressed the affected clubs directly to express regret for the incident.
The university’s statement emphasized its condemnation of the actions and its commitment to addressing the harm caused by the imagery.
