A stunning debut victory for Jarno Widar capped off a dramatic finale at the 105th Tre Valli Varesine, as the 20-year-old Belgian rider defied expectations to claim the race ahead of favorites Tom Pidcock and Matteo Jorgenson. Widar, who turned professional earlier this year after standout U23 performances, capitalized on a late breakaway that included Pidcock and Jorgenson, launching a solo sprint from the back of the trio with over 200 meters remaining.
Despite Pidcock’s strong effort—including a decisive attack on the penultimate climb—Pidcock finished second, while Jorgenson settled for third, with Quinn Simmons leading the reduced peloton across the line in fourth. The race unfolded over a grueling 196km course featuring six laps of a punchy circuit, including the Montello climb, before concluding with a final ascent to Barasso, where Pidcock’s aggressive move set the stage for Widar’s unexpected triumph.
