Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech arrive in Blacksburg with two late-season games decided by the slimmest of margins, each hinging on missed field goals that cost their teams dearly. The Hokies lost 35–33 to Pitt and 25–20 to California in their last two outings, while Georgia Tech edged Duke 28–25 in a game that came down to a field goal attempt.
With a Clemson showdown looming after this ACC clash, the Yellow Jackets (2–3, 1–1) and Hokies (4–2, 1–2) will need to turn the tide in three key areas. Virginia Tech’s offense, led by quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, has leaned heavily on its passing attack—averaging 310.2 yards per game through six contests—but their rushing attack has struggled, managing just 146.3 yards per game.
Georgia Tech’s run defense, however, held Duke’s star back Marcellous Hawkins Jr. to just 99 yards on 27 carries, the first time all season the running back fell below 116 yards.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech’s pass rush, which had 12 sacks in its first two games, will target Georgia Tech’s battered offensive line, where quarterback Alberto Mendoza has already been sacked 10 times this season. The Hokies’ defense, now under defensive coordinator Brent Pry, will need to regain its early-season intensity after a quiet performance against Cal, where only senior defensive tackle Kemari Copeland recorded a sack.
With both teams’ fates hanging in the balance, Lane Stadium could be the stage where one squad finally breaks its losing streak.
