The Washington Nationals secured fourth place in the National East division and avoided a last-place finish by defeating the New York Mets 7-6 at Nationals Park. A 357 million dollar payroll left New York at the bottom of the division for the first time since 2003 following the loss.
Washington capitalized on an early two-run single from CJ Abrams and four wild pitches in the third inning. After starting pitcher Andrew Alvarez surrendered two home runs in the fifth frame, Dylan Crews propelled the squad ahead with a decisive blast to left field in the seventh inning.
