The Giants just traded for J.J. McCarthy. Will he start for them?

The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft selection.

New York made the move following a season-ending knee injury suffered by starting signal-caller Jaxson Dart. McCarthy previously spent two seasons in Minnesota, where he missed his rookie campaign due to injury before starting ten games in 2025 and subsequently losing the backup role to Carson Wentz during the 2026 offseason.

Despite the acquisition, head coach John Harbaugh stated that veteran Jameis Winston will remain entrenched as the team's starting quarterback moving forward. Harbaugh confirmed that Winston's performance in a Week 3 victory against the Tennessee Titans would not alter the team's depth chart plans.

McCarthy now joins the organization in hopes of reviving his early career under a fresh start.
