The Texas Longhorns’ 1–10 loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry marked the first time since 2018 that the Sooners defeated the top-ranked team in the country, as Texas entered the game ranked No. 1 while Oklahoma sat outside the AP poll entirely.
The upset hinged on two critical special teams plays: a blocked punt return for a Sooners touchdown in the second quarter and a missed 53-yard field goal attempt by Texas’ Gianni Spetic with 1:54 left on the clock. The Longhorns’ special teams unit, already a known weakness, struggled further on punt returns, with Ryan Niblett averaging just 1.3 yards per return (excluding a single long gain) and totaling only 16 yards on nine forced turnovers.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s Tate Sandell sealed the win with a 42-yard game-winning field goal after a pair of clutch catches by Isaiah Sategna III, who advanced the ball 60 yards in two plays from the Sooners’ 39-yard line to Texas’ 28-yard line.
