Tennessee’s defense and explosive second-half run game propelled the No. 14 Volunteers to a 26-10 upset victory over sixth-ranked Alabama at Neyland Stadium on Saturday.
The Vols, who entered the game on a three-game home winning streak against the Crimson Tide, held a narrow 3-0 lead after a 12-play, 63-yard opening drive capped by a field goal. Alabama’s lone touchdown came on a 14-yard Keelon Russell run after a Tennessee fumble, but the Vols’ offense stalled in response, and the teams traded field goals to head into halftime tied at 12-10.
Running back DeSean Bishop then took over, rushing for 159 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries in the second half, including a pivotal end-zone drive that extended Tennessee’s lead. Quarterback George MacIntyre completed 21 of 31 passes for 197 yards and no turnovers, while the Vols’ defense forced four Crimson Tide turnovers, including a game-sealing interception by Kayin Lee.
Head coach Josh Heupel praised his team’s ability to execute under pressure, particularly in the final minutes, where a five-minute third-quarter drive sealed the win.
