During an SEC matchup on Saturday, the Volunteers coaching staff pulled starting quarterback Faizon Brandon in the opening half after he completed three of eight passes for zero yards, took two sacks, and threw his first interception of the year which led directly to a Tigers touchdown. Seeking a spark with the team trailing 7-3, the program inserted sophomore backup George MacIntyre into the lineup.
Brandon had previously dealt with heavy pressure and a shoulder injury during a prior defeat against Texas, where opposing defenders sacked him ten times. Josh Heupel had expressed public support for the rookie earlier in the week despite ongoing offensive line adjustments following an injury to guard Wendell Moe Jr.
