Fernando Tatis Jr. ignited an eight-run shutout victory for San Diego against Chicago in the opening matchup of the National League Wild Card Series by driving the opening pitch over the wall.
Later in the contest, Tatis turned an infield single and a subsequent throwing error into a daring dash all the way home from first base, outrunning the defense for a wild score that teammate Manny Machado preferred over the initial home run. Machado also contributed offensively with a first-inning blast and a double that drove in Tatis, placing the Padres in position to clinch the best-of-three matchup during the upcoming game.
