Stewart up 496 places after fourth at Alfred Dunhill Links

October 5, 2026

Michael Stewart’s career trajectory took a dramatic turn this week after he secured a joint fourth-place finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, vaulting him from 979th to 483rd in the world rankings. The 36-year-old Scot, who had previously struggled to make an impact on the DP World Tour, finished two shots behind winner Adrian Meronk and tied with Tommy Fleetwood, earning a career-high payday and a direct pathway to the Challenge Tour through the Spanish Open.

Stewart, who had only made six appearances on the tour before this event, revealed that advice from playing partner MJ Daffue helped him prioritize the Spanish Open over the Tartan Pro Tour’s season finale at Gleneagles, where a runner-up finish would have secured a lower-tier tour card. His performance at St Andrews—just one shot behind defending champion Robert MacIntyre—marked his best week in professional golf, offering renewed confidence after a disappointing finish at The Open earlier this year.

Stewart’s breakthrough follows a recent £2,500 win at the Tartan Pro Tour event in Edinburgh, but his top-10 result at St Andrews delivered nearly 100 times that amount and a pivotal ranking boost. The Ayrshire-based golfer, a former Walker Cup player, described his week as a career highlight, contrasting it with his frustration at The Open in 2023, where he felt he squandered a potential special weekend.

With his improved standing, Stewart now eyes a brighter future on the Challenge Tour, where he hopes to build on this momentum and secure a permanent spot among the world’s elite golfers.
