Andrea Kimi Antonelli has rewritten Formula 1 history by becoming the youngest driver ever to claim the world championship at just 20 years and 68 days old. His triumph not only breaks the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel by over three years but also surpasses the milestones set by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who were significantly older when they first won the title.
Antonelli’s achievement is all the more remarkable for occurring in the same season as his first Grand Prix victory, a feat last matched by Keke Rosberg in 1982 and accomplished by only five other drivers in history, including the inaugural champion Giuseppe Farina in 1950.
The Italian driver also secured the championship with four races remaining, joining an elite group of drivers—including Michael Schumacher (twice) and Max Verstappen—who have clinched the title early. His victory elevates Italy to joint-fifth place in the all-time championship standings, with four total titles, all secured within the first four years of the world championship’s existence.
The 2026 season’s extended length, originally planned for 24 rounds, contrasts sharply with the seven-race inaugural championship, highlighting how modern campaigns demand far greater endurance from drivers.
