The Indiana Fever’s offseason took a pivotal turn after their first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Las Vegas Aces, leaving the team at a critical juncture as they aim to build a championship-caliber roster around their top draft picks, Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark. With guards Kelsey Mitchell and Sophie Cunningham both entering unrestricted free agency, general manager Amber Cox signaled a strong desire to retain Mitchell long-term, but Cunningham’s future remains uncertain.
The veteran guard, who provided key off-the-bench scoring (7.9 points per game) and was the team’s third-leading three-point shooter (67 makes, 41.9% from deep), emerged as a reliable secondary option alongside Mitchell (24.7 ppg), Clark (22.3 ppg), and Boston (16.1 ppg). However, her production and efficiency declined sharply in the latter half of the season, averaging just 4.5 points on 32.7% shooting from three in August and September, culminating in a 7.3-point, 1.3-rebound performance in the playoff loss.
Head coach Stephanie White emphasized the need for complementary pieces to round out the team’s core, prioritizing a versatile wing who can defend, rebound, and stretch the floor—roles Cunningham has filled in flashes but not consistently. Cox acknowledged Cunningham’s leadership, shooting prowess, and locker-room influence, calling her a ‘solid connector’ and ‘important voice,’ but the Fever’s hands are tied by free agency rules as they weigh whether to re-sign her or explore other options for her third team in four years.
