Sonay Kartal knocks out former grand slam finalist to reach Wuhan Open quarter-finals

Britain's rising star Sonay Kartal continued her impressive comeback by defeating former Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-0 to reach the Wuhan Open quarter‑finals. The 24‑year‑old, who missed six months of the season with a stress fracture, dropped only two games and ended the Italian's run with an 11‑game streak.

Kartal, ranked No. 170, had already upset ninth‑seed Belinda Bencic and Anhelina Kalinina in earlier rounds, putting her back in contention for a top‑100 spot.

Her next match will be against fifth seed Elina Svitolina. In the same round, Maja Chwalinska and Diana Shnaider also advanced, beating Iva Jovic and Karolina Muchova respectively.
