Somerset and Notts chase history, Bears also in hunt

Somerset are pursuing an unprecedented maiden County Championship crown, seeking to finally end a drought that has seen them finish as runners-up six times from 2001 to 2019. Long past the celebrated era of Ian Botham, Viv Richards, and Joel Garner, the current leaders rely on seasoned figures such as Tom Abell, Lewis Gregory, Jack Leach, and all-rounder Craig Overton, who has urged focus rather than prematurely eyeing silverware.

Somerset hold a four-point advantage at the summit after capitalising on Nottinghamshire dropping points against struggling Leicestershire earlier this month.

Defending champions Nottinghamshire are aiming for back-to-back crowns after denying Surrey four consecutive trophies a year ago. Joe Clarke leads the division with 1,240 runs, while Dillon Pennington and Olly Stone spearhead the bowling, the latter having claimed 9-95 during a 54-run win over Hampshire at Trent Bridge before upcoming fixtures against Sussex and Yorkshire.

Lurking just behind the top two are Warwickshire, who maintain their own title ambitions following a recent one-wicket victory against Sussex inspired by Chris Woakes, alongside dominant displays in their subsequent two matches.
