Southern Methodist University’s women’s volleyball team delivered a stunning upset to the nation’s second-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers on Wednesday, ending their 14-0 start and snapping a 58-game home winning streak in a four-set thriller. The Mustangs, now 13-2 overall and 5-0 in ACC play, prevailed 21-25, 25-19, 38-36, and 25-22, with a dominant third set showcasing their resilience.
SMU’s offensive firepower was on full display, as five players reached double-digit kills, led by middle blocker Natalia Newsome and outside hitter Suli Davis, each recording 17 kills. The Mustangs also out-blocked Pitt 12.5 to 6, marking their third straight match with at least 12 team blocks, while libero Victoria Harris anchored the defense with 20 digs and four aces, pushing her career total closer to 1,000 digs.
The victory extended SMU’s ACC winning streak to 14 games, the longest active run in the conference, and left Nebraska as the only undefeated team remaining in the nation. The Panthers, now 14-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, saw standout Olivia Babcock set two program career records with 25 kills and 176 aces, though she acknowledged the loss as a chance to reassess their performance standards.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday, October 11, with SMU hosting the rematch on ESPN at 3 p.m. ET.
