The New York Liberty’s playoff push took a turn after a contentious late-game sequence in their Game 2 loss to the Atlanta Dream, where a disputed timeout call left star guard Breanna Stewart and her team questioning the officiating. With 4.3 seconds remaining and the Liberty trailing by three, Stewart approached referee Kevin Fahy to request a timeout, only to be informed none were left—despite the team’s belief they still had one available.
The miscommunication led to a rushed final possession, culminating in Stewart’s missed shot as Atlanta sealed a 101–98 overtime victory. The WNBA later addressed the incident, confirming video and audio evidence showed Stewart had asked for the timeout amid overlapping conversations between players, officials, and bench staff.
While the league acknowledged the referees could have handled the interaction more clearly, it stated no further action would be taken, calling the situation resolved as part of its standard review process. The ruling comes as the Liberty, now down 2–0 in the series, face mounting frustration over officiating decisions that could further complicate their playoff hopes.
