Serena Williams’ coach Rennae Stubbs has sharply criticized the WTA Tour for its silence following racial abuse directed at Coco Gauff after her third-round victory at the China Open. During her 7-5, 6-1 win over Xinran Sun, Gauff requested a video review over a disputed point involving LED screens, which ultimately swung momentum in her favor as she went on to win in straight sets.
The incident sparked a wave of online harassment, including racial slurs, but the WTA failed to issue a public statement in Gauff’s defense, prompting Stubbs’ outspoken condemnation on her podcast. Stubbs argued that the organization’s lack of leadership was unacceptable, contrasting it with the WNBA’s eventual response to similar issues.
She also praised Gauff’s decision to withdraw from the Wuhan Open, where she had won the title the previous year, calling it a necessary step after enduring the backlash. Gauff will now focus on the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, where she has already secured her spot among six qualified players, including Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, and Jessica Pegula, with the championship serving as her final tournament of the season.
