Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has dismissed the idea that a blocked 48-yard field goal attempt by Harrison Mevis in Monday night’s overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills could have altered the game’s outcome. McVay told reporters Friday that he believed the kick would have missed even without Bills defensive end Gregory Rousseau’s block, citing the ball’s trajectory as misaligned.
The Rams subsequently cut Mevis from the roster, handing the kicking duties to Blake Grupe, a veteran with a career-long of 60 yards. Grupe’s elevation and range offer the Rams a new option for high-stakes situations, though McVay emphasized the need to place him in positions where success is more likely—particularly on extra points.
Special-teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone praised Grupe’s consistency and explosive delivery, noting his ability to generate lift on kicks despite his size. The Rams now look to Grupe to provide stability in a unit that lost the game’s decisive moment.
