The Washington Commanders' backfield took a major hit ahead of Monday night’s showdown with the San Francisco 49ers, as running back Bill Croskey-Merritt was ruled out with a reinjured groin. Croskey-Merritt, who had energized the Commanders with a standout performance in their Week 5 tie against the New York Giants, aggravated the same injury he suffered in August and will miss the game, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Friday.
The setback leaves Washington relying on a rotating group of backs, including Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White, who were cleared to play despite their own separate injuries (Ekeler with a chest issue, White with a shoulder concern). Quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee), edge rusher Javontae Jean-Baptiste (pec), and defensive lineman Charles Omenihu (groin/ankle) were also ruled out, while several other players—including receiver Stefon Diggs (hamstring), defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw (ankle/knee), and center Lucas Patrick (illness)—remain questionable.
The Commanders also welcomed Jeremy McNichols back from injury reserve, with Quinn noting the team will lean on a mix of backs to fill the void left by Croskey-Merritt’s absence.
