The Detroit Lions have reportedly added veteran return specialist DeAndre Carter to their practice squad, addressing a critical need after losing their primary punt and kick returner, Tom Kennedy, for the season due to a knee injury requiring surgery. Carter, who has spent his eight-year career bouncing between teams as a practice-squad player and occasional starter, brings extensive experience, including 155 punt returns for 1,508 yards (9.7 avg.) and 144 kick returns for 3,399 yards (23.6 avg.), highlighted by a 101-yard touchdown return.
The Lions, who already have eight active roster and four practice-squad candidates competing for the role, aim to bolster their return game with Carter’s proven ability to separate and create yards after the catch, despite his undrafted background out of Sacramento State in 2015. The move leaves an open spot on the practice squad after the Lions released safety Jalen Mills earlier this week.
Carter’s NFL journey has included stints with the Eagles, Texans, Bears (twice), Commanders, Chargers, Raiders, and most recently the Browns in 2025, showcasing his durability and adaptability. Beyond returns, he has also contributed as a wide receiver, logging 117 receptions for 1,331 yards and six touchdowns over his career.
While the Lions have not yet confirmed the signing, the addition aligns with their strategy of leveraging veteran depth to fill gaps in key special-teams positions.
