Dave Dombrowski met with manager Don Mattingly in his office at Citizens Bank Park two days after the Phillies’ season ended on Oct. 1, spending about two hours reviewing the campaign and next year’s direction.
Dombrowski praised Mattingly’s work and said he remains a leading candidate to return, while Mattingly acknowledged the previous year felt like a different team and pointed to August’s 21‑7 stretch as a glimpse of the club’s potential.
Mattingly said he wants a faster, more aggressive style that emphasizes defense, baserunning and the “little things,” noting the Phillies have speed they aren’t fully using and that they have been too cautious. He plans to stress taking walks, swinging at strikes and playing clean, disciplined baseball during spring training to set the tone for his first full season as skipper.
