Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield might be sidelined for as long as a month and a half due to a dislocated right thumb he sustained during a game against the Minnesota Vikings. Although scans showed clean results with zero fractures or structural damage to ligaments and tendons, his eventual return depends entirely on regaining proper grip strength in his throwing hand.
The franchise has opted against placing him on injured reserve immediately, giving him a chance to beat the outer timeline of six weeks.
Head coach Todd Bowles previously indicated a minimum three-week absence, which rules him out for upcoming contests against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and Pittsburgh Steelers. In the interim, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will step into the starting role, starting with the upcoming home fixture against Green Bay.
