Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash has opted to start Nick Martinez in the World Series opener against Milwaukee, bypassing ace Drew Rasmussen. Cash indicated the decision aims to provide Rasmussen additional recovery time following his heavy workload during the postseason.
Martinez, who joined the Rays on a one-year contract, posted a 3.10 regular-season ERA and performed well in his previous playoff appearance. He is scheduled to face Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, a top contender for the National League Cy Young award.
The rotation adjustment also grants extra rest to Freddy Peralta ahead of his expected start in the third game.
