Lancashire has opted against extending the contract of 44-year-old fast bowler James Anderson for the 2027 season, concluding a tenure that began in 2002. The decision was communicated to the veteran seamer during the week of October 21, 2026, shortly after the appointments of Richard Kenyon as chief executive and Paul Farbrace as director of cricket.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain has publicly questioned the move, citing Anderson's impressive 2026 County Championship performance, where he captained the side and secured 50 wickets at an average of 17. Hussain argued that the bowler remains highly capable and suggested that most other counties would still value his skill and experience.
He further noted that the decision to move on from the veteran following his final Test in July 2024 was questionable, asserting that Anderson would have been a strong asset during England's 2024-25 Ashes tour in Australia.
