James Madison's loss at App State opens Group of Six CFP scenarios, highlights Pac-12's 'flex week' game

October 23, 2026

James Madison saw its undefeated season end in a 34-31 overtime defeat against Appalachian State this past Thursday. This result complicates the playoff outlook for Group of Six programs, as the path to a postseason berth becomes more difficult.

Meanwhile, the Pac-12 is looking toward its unique flex week in November to potentially bolster its playoff resume. By allowing teams to schedule late-season matchups that do not impact conference standings, the league hopes to improve its chances of securing a spot in the 12-team bracket.
