Speculation around Hardik Pandya’s potential move ahead of the IPL 2027 auction has intensified, but former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the idea of a transfer to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as highly unlikely. While reports suggested CSK, led by former captain MS Dhoni, were in a strong position to sign the Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder, Ashwin noted tensions between Pandya and incoming CSK coach Zaheer Khan—who previously clashed with the player during his tenure with MI.
The relationship between the two franchises now appears strained, with Ashwin calling the possibility of Pandya joining CSK a ‘long shot,’ despite Dhoni’s reported efforts to persuade him. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have emerged as the frontrunner in the race for Pandya’s services, according to Ashwin’s assessment of ongoing trade discussions.
MI’s own coaching transition adds further uncertainty, as the franchise prepares to replace outgoing head coach Mahela Jayawardene with one of five shortlisted candidates—including Michael Hussey, Eoin Morgan, and Aaron Finch—before finalizing their squad for the auction. The timing of these decisions could significantly impact Pandya’s future, as both CSK and RR explore their options in the coming weeks.
