Rams waive returner Xavier Smith

Los Angeles has decided to part ways with Xavier Smith, reversing a previous stance regarding the team's special teams coordinator indicating no alterations were planned for the punt returner role. Smith handled primary return duties for the franchise across the prior two years and registered specific averages of 9.9 yards per punt return and 20.6 yards per kick return through the opening three games of the current schedule.

A costly error during the previous weekend's defeat against Denver proved notable, involving a poor decision to field a punt deep near the goal line that should have resulted in a touchback. While he did not register a reception during the current campaign, he previously contributed 18 catches for 303 yards over the course of the 2025 season.

Konata Mumpfield currently occupies the backup position on the unofficial depth chart and appears positioned to take over return responsibilities when the squad faces Philadelphia on Sunday.
