Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open after suffering a shoulder injury, just one day after securing her first WTA 1000 title in two years. Zheng defeated French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) to win the China Open final on Sunday, marking a triumphant return to elite competition for the Chinese star.
Andreeva, who had just reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros earlier this year, also pulled out of the Wuhan tournament following her loss in Beijing. Both players cited the same injury concerns, leaving the 1,000-level event without its two top seeds.
Zheng’s victory in China included a moment of emotional celebration, as she broke down on court after clinching the match with an ace on her first match point. The withdrawal now shifts focus to the remaining field as they prepare for the ongoing tournament in Wuhan.
