Legendary Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo 'Bazooka' Gomez has passed away at the age of 69. Gomez, a three-time world champion, dominated the ring across three weight classes, capturing the WBC super-bantamweight title, the WBC featherweight belt, and the WBA super-featherweight crown.
Known for his devastating power, Gomez compiled an impressive record of 44 wins in 48 professional fights, with 42 of those victories coming by knockout. His most notable triumph came against Mexican standout Carlos Zarate, whom he defeated in five rounds to retain his WBC super-bantamweight title in front of his home crowd in San Juan.
Gomez’s legacy in boxing was further cemented with his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) president Paco Valcarcel confirmed Gomez’s death, calling him a 'great champion' and a key figure in international boxing history.
