The Penn State–Michigan rivalry lost some of its usual luster this season as both programs struggle under new leadership. Penn State, led by Matt Campbell, has fallen into a three-game losing streak, derailing any hopes of a Big Ten title or playoff push.
Meanwhile, Michigan’s Kyle Whittingham has faced his own challenges, with the Wolverines dropping two straight games after a shaky opener against Western Michigan. Despite flashes of promise—including a narrow escape against Iowa and a win over Oklahoma—their offensive line has been exposed, with quarterback Bryce Underwood failing to sustain drives.
Penn State’s defense, however, has shown strength on third downs, though their ground game has stalled, averaging just 2.2 yards per carry in recent losses. Michigan’s defense, meanwhile, remains a bright spot, holding opponents to 2.8 yards per carry and stifling Penn State’s rushing attack.
The matchup on October 17 at Michigan Stadium will test both teams’ ability to break out of their current slumps, with neither appearing poised to dominate as they once did.
