The College Football Playoff is on the verge of a historic overhaul, with reports indicating an agreement to expand the postseason field to 24 teams beginning in 2027. This would mark a significant leap from the current 12-team format, doubling the number of participants and reshaping the landscape of college football.
The expansion comes after years of speculation, with the Big Ten and SEC leading the push for a larger playoff. The move could also render conference championship games obsolete, as the increased number of playoff spots would likely absorb many of those matchups.
Financial negotiations between the CFP and ESPN have been extended, with an estimated $320 million addition to the existing $1.2 billion annual contract at stake. The shift would further cement the playoff’s dominance, following its debut in 2014 and a 2024 expansion to 12 teams, where Ohio State became the first champion under the new format.
