The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a minor-league shuffle, trading defensemen Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Ryan Johnson. Johnson, a 25-year-old left-shot defender drafted 31st overall in 2019, has logged just 47 NHL games in his career, primarily appearing in the AHL since the 2023-24 season.
His contract runs through 2027-28, offering the Penguins a low-risk opportunity to evaluate a former first-round pick with limited NHL experience. The move also helps Pittsburgh streamline its minor-league roster, reducing its contracted depth from 50 to 48 players.
Jones, a 29-year-old with four NHL games last season, was waived earlier this year after injuries and a suspension cut short his campaign. Laatsch, a seventh-round pick in 2021, has spent most of his career in the ECHL and AHL, with no games played this season.
The trade clears space for the Penguins while giving Buffalo an additional minor-league option.
