The Pittsburgh Penguins reduced their active roster by three players on Sunday, reassigning forward Bill Zonnon, blueliner Harrison Brunicke, and netminder Joel Blomqvist to their American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Club management acknowledged that all three prospects performed admirably during training camp, though crowded depth charts necessitated the downward moves ahead of the upcoming regular-season cutoff.
While these cuts were widely anticipated, team observers expect all three youngsters to earn call-ups to the parent club at various points throughout the upcoming campaign given existing health concerns. Down in the AHL, Brunicke is slated to skate alongside Owen Pickering, Zonnon projects into a top-nine forward role, and Blomqvist is positioned as the primary starter.
Meanwhile, Sergei Murashov secured a spot on the opening NHL roster behind Arturs Silovs, and the squad prepares to launch its schedule Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
