The Green Bay Packers have spent the last two seasons struggling to reshape their offensive scheme to fit running back Josh Jacobs after moving away from Aaron Jones. For over a decade, the franchise relied heavily on outside zone running plays modeled after the Shanahan coaching tree utilized by Matt LaFleur and earlier coaches like Mike McCarthy, which suited lighter offensive linemen and Aaron Jones well.
However, signing Jacobs prompted a structural shift toward gap schemes and power runs that require a heavier, more physically imposing front line. Although the front office attempted to build a bigger roster through personnel decisions involving Aaron Banks, Anthony Belton, and Sean Rhyan, the mismatch between the blocking scheme and the running back has yielded poor results alongside the evolution of quarterback Jordan Love's role.
